Our guide to the care and maintenance of your BoKlok home

As you settle into your new BoKlok home, there are lots of ways you can care for your home, to keep it feeling fresh and new for longer. Below you can access some of our top tips.

Floor finishes

Please refer to the manufacturers’ guidance for further advice on maintenance of all the finishes below.

LTV wood-effect flooring

To clean LVT flooring, use a damp cloth with hot water and a mild detergent to help lift the stain, do not soak the floor. If you're using chemicals, ensure they are suitable for LVT flooring before applying.

Ceramic Floor Tiles

Ceramic floor tiles should be cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild detergent solution. Cream cleaners and abrasive agents should be avoided.

Carpets

To prolong the new look of your carpet, we recommend regular vacuuming, thus removing potentially damaging dirt and grit as this is a major cause of premature ageing and wear. Small spot stains should be treated as soon as possible, blotting the area not rubbing. For large or persistent stains, we advise you to consult a professional carpet cleaner.

All carpets, regardless of yarn content and quality type, may develop dark patches caused by uneven crushing of the pile in wear. This shading cannot be prevented, however well the carpet is made, and cannot be classed as a manufacturing defect.

Door Furniture

Your door furniture finishes should be cleaned regularly with a dry cloth or duster and washed periodically with soapy water and dried with a clean cloth. Do not use abrasive materials or acid based cleaning products.

Glazing

Glazing can contain impurities or marks. We use strict guidelines to ensure your glass is up to our high quality standards. If defects are very noticeable and highlighted at handover, we will replace the glass.

Glass must be viewed at right angles to the glass from the room side, standing at a distance of not less than 2m (or 3m for toughened, laminated or coated glass), in natural daylight and not in direct sunlight. This does not apply to the 50mm band around the perimeter of the unit.

Sanitaryware

It is important that when cleaning sanitaryware the appropriate product is used to avoid any damage. Please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for specific cleaning and care advice.

Showers & Screens

As with sanitaryware it is important that these items are cleaned with an appropriate cleaner on a regular basis in order to keep them in pristine condition. For your safety, avoid any products that may result in a slippery surface underfoot. Showerheads should be descaled on a monthly basis to remove any limescale from the spray holes. Periodically check that sealants around the bath and shower area are not broken.

Taps

Taps should be kept clean using a non-abrasive cleaning product and a soft, clean cloth. The use of abrasive cleaners should be avoided, as the surface-material can be scratched, eventually leading to the full removal of the surface material and subsequent corrosion.

Fixtures & Fittings

Fixtures

When hanging pictures, care must be taken not to disturb any pipes or electric cabling that may lie beneath the surface of the wall. We strongly recommend that you use a cable detector, which can be bought from most DIY stores.

Redecorating

If you plan to redecorate your home, we recommend that you wait at least nine months. Paint that is applied too soon may crack as the moisture in the construction evaporates. BoKlok will not be held responsible for damage to decorations which have been applied too soon.

Kitchen Units

Regular cleaning is recommended using a mild, non-abrasive, household cleaner or a solution of washing up liquid and warm water, applied with a soft chamois leather or window cloth. Do not use any scouring powders, creams, abrasive sponges, solvents, acetones or white spirit. Apply only light pressure and gently rub over the surface, wipe dry with a soft, clean cloth.

Sustainable DIY

The following provides details of how you can ensure that decorating and DIY are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner.

Whatever your DIY project, think carefully about what materials are needed and what can be reused, for example, can materials come from a reclaimed source?

  • Try to use sustainable products
  • Wood – ensure it comes from a renewable source such as a managed forest
  • Use recycled synthetics
  • Opt for paints with a low or zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) rating or look for those with the European Ecolabel, which are more environmentally friendly, such as plant based stains and sealers, or water based products
  • Dispose of DIY waste products responsibly – you can obtain advice from your local council
